Farmer-simplified version (non-technical)

Below is a farmer-friendly, non-technical SOP written in simple language, suitable for on-farm use, cooperatives, and TESDA community training.
This version avoids lab jargon while preserving safety, cleanliness, and effectiveness for agarwood inoculant production.

FARMER-FRIENDLY SOP

Making Agarwood Fungal Inoculant

(From Clean Culture to Rice Substrate)

WHAT IS THIS FOR?

This guide teaches farmers how to multiply agarwood-friendly fungi using:

  • Clean starter culture (from lab or supplier)
  • Cooked rice for easy and affordable production

The final product is used to help agarwood trees form resin faster and better.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS

✅ Work clean
✅ Use only the approved starter culture
❌ Do not mix different fungi
❌ Do not use moldy or smelly materials

MATERIALS NEEDED

Starter

  • Clean fungal starter (from PDA plate, bottle, or supplier)

Rice Substrate

  • Rice (white or brown)
  • Clean water
  • Pressure cooker or drum steamer
  • Heat-safe bottles or plastic bags
  • Cotton or breathable cloth
  • Alcohol (70%)

Tools

  • Knife or spoon
  • Alcohol spray
  • Clean table or room

STEP 1: PREPARE THE RICE

  1. Wash rice until water is clear
  2. Soak rice for 30 minutes
  3. Cook rice until:
    • Soft but not soggy
    • Grains are still whole
  4. Let rice cool

💡 Rice should feel dry on the outside but cooked inside

STEP 2: PACK & STERILIZE

  1. Fill containers half-full only
  2. Cover opening with:
    • Cotton, or
    • Clean cloth tied with rubber band
  3. Sterilize using:
    • Pressure cooker: 30–45 minutes
    • Or steam drum: 1 hour
  4. Let cool completely before opening

⚠️ Do not open while hot

STEP 3: ADD THE FUNGUS (VERY IMPORTANT STEP)

  1. Clean hands and tools with alcohol
  2. Work in a clean room (no wind, no dust)
  3. Cut or scoop small pieces of the starter fungus
  4. Put 5–10 small pieces into the rice
  5. Close container immediately
  6. Shake gently to spread

🚫 Do NOT touch fungus with bare hands

STEP 4: INCUBATION (WAITING PERIOD)

  1. Keep containers in:
    • Dark place
    • Room temperature
  2. Do NOT open during growth
  3. Check every 2 days

⏳ Waiting time: 7–14 days

HOW TO KNOW IT IS READY

✅ Rice is fully covered with white fungus
✅ Smells clean or slightly mushroom-like
❌ Throw away if:

  • Green, black, or slimy growth appears
  • Bad or sour smell

STEP 5: USE OR STORE

You can:

  • Use directly for agarwood inoculation
  • Mix with clean water to make liquid inoculant

Storage

  • Use within 1 month
  • Keep in cool place
  • Do not freeze

COMMON FARMER MISTAKES (AVOID THESE)

❌ Rice too wet
❌ Opening container too often
❌ Mixing different fungi
❌ Poor cleaning of tools
❌ Using moldy rice

SAFETY & CLEANLINESS RULES

✔ Wash hands
✔ Clean tools with alcohol
✔ Keep children & animals away
✔ Burn or bury rejected cultures
